The main keep (Daitenshu) has 6 floors above ground and 1 basement level. Here's what to look for on each floor: Basement & 1st Floor: The castle's defensive features — stone-dropping holes (ishiotoshi), arrow slits (sama), and the original wooden pillars. Look for the two massive central pillars that run the full height of the castle. 2nd & 3rd Floors: Exhibition rooms with historical artifacts, armor, and weapons. English explanations are available. The views of the castle grounds begin to open up here. 4th & 5th Floors: The steep staircases become more challenging here — good shoes are essential. The wooden construction becomes more visible and impressive. 6th Floor (Top): The panoramic view from the top is the reward for the climb. On clear days, you can see Himeji city, the Harima Plain, and the Seto Inland Sea. This floor also contains a small shrine (Osakabe Shrine). Practical tips for visiting: • Wear comfortable shoes — the staircases are steep and the floors are wooden (no shoes inside) • Bring a bag for your shoes (provided at the entrance) • Allow 60–90 minutes for the main keep alone • The castle can get very hot in summer — bring water • Photography is allowed throughout (no flash)

Best Photo Spots: • Sannomaru Square (三の丸広場): The large open plaza in front of the castle. Best for wide-angle shots showing the full castle. Cherry blossoms here in late March/early April are spectacular. • Koko-en Garden: The adjacent Japanese garden uses the castle as a backdrop. Beautiful in all seasons. • Hyotan Pond (ひょうたん池): A small pond near the castle entrance where the white walls reflect in the water. • Otemon Gate area: The main gate approach with stone walls on both sides creates a dramatic framing for photos. Nearby Attractions (within walking distance): • Koko-en Garden (好古園): A beautifully designed Japanese garden on the site of the former castle lord's residence. 9 separate garden areas. Admission ¥310 (or ¥1,050 combined with castle). Highly recommended. • Himeji City Museum of Art: 5-minute walk from the castle. Rotating exhibitions of Japanese and Western art. • Himeji Zoo: Located within the castle grounds. Small but charming, popular with families. Day Trip Combinations: • Himeji + Arima Onsen: Take JR to Himeji in the morning, then head to Arima Onsen for an afternoon/evening soak. About 90 minutes by train via Kobe. • Himeji + Shoshazan Engyo-ji: The mountain temple used in The Last Samurai is 30 minutes from Himeji by bus + ropeway. A full-day combination. • Himeji + Ako: The castle town of Ako (famous for the 47 Ronin story) is 40 minutes west of Himeji by JR.
