About Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle (姫路城), known as the "White Heron Castle" (Shirasagi-jo) for its brilliant white plastered walls, is Japan's most visited castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site registered in 1993. Located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, the castle complex was built in its current form between 1601 and 1609 by Ikeda Terumasa. Unlike many Japanese castles, Himeji Castle was never destroyed by war or fire — it survived both the Meiji Restoration and World War II air raids, making it one of the best-preserved original castle complexes in Japan.
The main keep stands six stories (seven floors including the basement) and is connected to three smaller keeps by covered corridors — a "compound keep" (renjuu-shiki tenshukaku) structure unique in Japan. The castle sits on a hill 45.6 meters above sea level, and the main keep rises an additional 31.5 meters, giving it a commanding presence over the surrounding cityscape.

Cherry Blossom Season (Late March – Early April)
Himeji Castle is one of Japan's most iconic cherry blossom spots. Approximately 1,000 cherry trees surround the castle, creating a stunning pink-and-white contrast with the brilliant white walls.
Top cherry blossom viewing spots:
• Sannomaru Square (三の丸広場): The main open plaza in front of the castle — perfect for picnics under the cherry trees with the castle as a backdrop
• Himeji City Nishi-no-Maru Garden: Weeping cherry trees with the castle visible from the garden
• Semmarugi Cherry Blossom Avenue: The lane leading toward Koko-en Garden
Night illumination: During cherry blossom season, the castle is illuminated at night until around 9 PM, creating a magical scene.
Crowds: Expect very large crowds on weekends and national holidays. We recommend arriving before 9:00 AM on weekdays for the best experience.
Tips for Visiting
• Plan at least 2-3 hours for the full castle complex including the main keep and Nishi-no-Maru
• Wear comfortable shoes — the castle involves significant climbing on steep wooden stairs
• The castle interior can be cold in winter and hot in summer — dress in layers
• Photography inside the main keep is permitted on all floors
• English audio guides are available at the entrance (¥300 rental)
• Luggage storage is available near the East entrance
• The castle has limited accessibility for wheelchairs due to the historical structure; contact the castle office for details
• A combined itinerary with Engyoji Temple on Mt. Shosha (accessible by ropeway, 20 min from Himeji Station) makes for a perfect full-day Himeji experience
